Mietta Song Recital Award 2003

Finals, Semi-finals and Masterclasses

Congratulations to the eight semi-finalists. They were:

  • Caroline Chown, Sydney, soprano
  • Amy Cutler, Brisbane, soprano
  • Leah Thomas, North Sydney, soprano
  • Caroline Wenborne, St Ives NSW, soprano
  • Joanne Goodman, Eastwood NSW, mezzo-soprano
  • Linden Loader Wellington, New Zealand, mezzo-soprano
  • Benjamin Martin, Victoria, tenor
  • James Payne, Sydney, baritone

The finals and semi-finals of the 2003 Mietta Song Recital Award were held at Federation Hall, Victorian College of the Arts (entry via Grant Street), Southbank, Melbourne 3000.

The Semi Finals were held on Saturday 12th April, at 12noon (doors opened 11.30am). The Finals were conducted on the following day, Sunday 13th April, from 2pm (doors opened 1.30pm).

Masterclasses, sponsored by the Myer Foundation, were held for semi-finalists and the public was also invited to attend. They were presented by:

  • Geoffrey Tozer
    Wednesday 9 April, 2pm to 4.30 pm Australian National Academy of Music, South Melbourne Town Hall, Bank Street, South Melbourne

  • Lauris Elms and Len Vorster
    Thursday 10 April, 11 am to 3pm Room 303, School of Music, Victorian College of the Arts, St. Kilda Rd, Melbourne

  • Denise Shepherd and David McSkimming
    Thursday 10 April, 6pm to 9pm Room 216, School of Music, Victorian College of the Arts, St. Kilda Rd, Melbourne

The Master-classes were sponsored by the Myer Foundation. Geoffrey Tozer has an international reputation as a pianist and accompanist. Lauris Elms AM OBE has had a distinguished operatic career and gained an enviable reputation for Lieder singing. She will be assisted by the distinguished pianist Len Vorster. Later that day French language teacher and singer Madame Denise Shepherd will also conduct a class. The Master-classes were open to students of music and, space permitting, the general public.
