The Treasure Restaurant
Chinese restaurants have followed their clients out into the suburbs - like Forest Hills - and Treasure is one of them. First class food and service that is very much in the Hong Kong style like this, would once have been unthinkable outside Chinatown.
The Treasure is one large room with lots of Chinese families, lots of noise, and very good service. There are some exceptional dishes here, notably the fish noodles (the actual pasta is made from pounded fish - a very tricky operation) and the female mudcrab. The food is Cantonese with many special Hong Kong style dishes. It's a happy place, filled with large tables celebrating. The Chinese families seem to have parties which span the generations and babies learning to eat anything and everything are very much part of the ambience here. But, ambience values vary between cultures. In most popular Chinese restaurants the priority is the food and that the place should be brightly lit so that you can see it.The wine list is short, not the priority, but does include some fairly priced cellar specials. Interesting to see some very classically French desserts on the menu. Crepes Suzette, Coupe Romanoff and Peach Melba share the list with - banana fritters, of course and, less expected - green tea icecream with red bean.
