Waiting at Punchlane
You'll be pleased as Punch to meet a friend here for a drink during the day or evening.
It is one of inner Melbourne's more pleasant spots for a glass of wine and a plate of carefully selected cheese. The room is divided into sections with the bar in the middle. Noise level and smoke control varies according to the time and vagaries of the customers. If you arrive and it seems noisy and smokey, save your visit for another time or sit outside in Little Bourke Street, weather permitting this is a fascinating spot to observe theatre goers rushing off to performances, Chinese families going into the restaurants opposite, and just to note how much this block has come on in the past two years. The number of city residents in this area have brought to it a sense of life, even on Sundays.
The owners of Punch Lane have tried very hard to create a place where people will feel comfortable. You can eat a full meal if you wish but they are very accomodating to those who want to nibble, to share one plate or just to have a drink.
The dishes themselves attract varying reports and seem to lack consistency as there's often a bit of a clash between the demands of diners and the wine drinkers.
