Momotaro Rahmen
Runner Up: The New Star
Mietta's Eating & Drinking in Melbourne 2000
Page 162
In the old Japanese tale of Momotaro a little boy is born from a giant peach, and then grows up to fight demons. Momotaro is brave and strong, and generously shares the treasure and all his food with his companions. In such a way does Reiji, the 'chief cook' at Momotaro Rahmen share his special noodles - home-made and hand-kneaded every day. The menu is mostly noodles in soup; Tokyo-style in a shoyu broth, or a richer miso and pork version. The serves are generous, with vegetarian and children's size noodles also available. Of course, with 'rahmen' come gyoza dumplings, and there are also some curry dishes and interesting sushi, such as tuna and chilli, all ordered by the piece; and wonderful spring rolls. The music is young and fast, but this small cafe has a mood of relaxed simplicity that is something to do with the chef's huge smile of welcome, or is it the delicately refined green tea ice-cream...or perhaps the way the light in Richmond bounces gently off those deep-yellow walls..?
