Mario's Cafe
Runner Up: Favourite Coffee Place
Mietta's Eating & Drinking in Melbourne 2000
Page 111
After 14 years, Marios considers itself to be an 'old time player' on the street. Ceretainly many other cafes have come and gone in that time. It's a place for all times of day, all reasons, as much for a coffee as for a meal. But the all-day breakfast is what really set the stamp on Melbourne's cafe society. It heralded the acceptance of the Fitzroy lifestyle, the musicians and artists who 'live the night' and who want bacon and eggs at 6pm not 6am. Marios is still the place to see and be seen. Excellent coffee, reliable food, good value, smart waiters verging on the cheeky. A place with soul, but it's the real thing not a cliche here.
