Kazen Japanese Cafe
Mietta's Eating & Drinking in Melbourne 2000
Contributors' Choice Page 106
Some of the fussiest eaters of Japanese food recommend this small Brunswick St cafe. And when you learn of the pedigree of the chef-owner it is no surprise. Kazu Kiko Ueda learnt not only traditonal cuisine in Japan, but also worked at a quality Italian restaurant there, where standards of European cuisine can be very high. In Melbourne he has been many years at Kenzan and Kuni's and enjoys high respect from the owners of both those establishments. He is trying very hard to emulate their success and puts a great deal of effort into his dishes. The Italian experience comes out in some combinations, such as beef carpaccio with citrus and ginger.
