Joe and Ruth Vail have been hosts in one of Melbourne's early Nepalese restaurants for more than 10 years. In his quiet, unassuming way, Joe makes his diners feel at home with a tranquility typical of the Nepalese. The usual pappadams and chutney and cold water come out with the menu.
The menu is extensive. Start with a dhall soup ($3.50). The khasiko masu makes a good main dish of tender pieces of goat meat bathed in a well-spiced curry sauce ($14.50). Round off the meal with the sell roti, a traditional festival bread. This sweet doughnut-shaped bread is made of rice flour, mashed bananas and honey, and deep-fried ($3.50).
