The European

The owners of the European have great vision. They got this place open very quickly but it has taken a while to bring aspirations and achievement into line. During autumn visits it seemed that the front of house was more settled and a new chef was doing consistently good dishes. Beautiful flavours in a cotechino with lentils which seemed more Spanish than Italian. A city resident who has watched progress says "these guys (the owners) do a good job of mimicking Euro design. They know exactly what they want to mimick and get the photos of European bars to copy. It may be copycat stuff but it is done very well. Not inspiringly original but very comfortable." As The European has settled down so has its usage throughout the day and night increased. It has become a popular breakfast spot on Sundays. There are a band of regulars who simply could not go without their french toast with cinammon creme fraiche and maple syrup or The European breakfast of free range eggs any way, tomato, bacon, mushrooms and toast. And, the favourite waiter, Scott, "who gets Sundays off to a good start with his considerate attention, but mostly for his laconic wit."
Oh, and then there is the wine list, which is awesomely large. As you would expect from the owners of Syracuse which runs one of Melbourne's best lists.
