Dumpling King Chinese Restaurant
Mietta's Eating & Drinking in Melbourne 2000
Contributors' Choice Page 98
People travel from all over Melbourne to come to this simple shopfront cafe in Box Hill. The specialities remain the same and we keep going back for more. Shanghai-style dumplings are succulent, sweet and dangerously juicy. Bring your own linen bib if you are wearing a silk shirt. But most of all, bring a good appetite because you should start with a platter of cold smoked poultry and meats, then move onto dumplings and noodles in soup. Better still bring a group of hungry friends and try the whole menu. Save your wines for another occasion and drink lots of tea. If there's any room the red bean paste pancake is a not-too-sweet dessert or try the eight treasure sticky rice with its flowery sauce, or the dumpling with sweet sesame filling in soup (very sweet). Service here is very helpful, staff are able and proud to explain the dishes.
