Continental Torte
Preamble
Ingredients2 cups Plain Flour 1 cup Castor Sugar 3 teaspoons Baking Powder 3/4 teaspoon Salt 3 oz Butter melted 4 oz Chocolate melted 1 teaspoon Vanilla Essence 1 cup Milk 2 Egg Yolks 1 whole Egg |
MethodGrease two 8 inch round sandwich tins and place a round of greaseproof paper on the bottom of each tin. Sift together flour, sugar, baking powder and salt. Add the melted butter; then the melted chocolate, vanilla essence and half the milk; beat for 2 minutes. Add remaining milk, egg yolks and whole egg; mix well. Pour mixture into prepared tins and bake in moderate oven (350 deg. F.) for 30-35 minutes. Turn cakes out on to a wire rack to cool. Frosting: 2 egg whites 1/2 cup apple jelly Peppermint essence Place apple jelly, egg whites and a few drops of peppermint essence in a basin. Cook over a saucepan of boiling water, beating with a rotary beater, until mixture is thick and fluffy, approximately 2 minutes. Remove from heat and continue beating a minute longer. Split cakes in half and spread frosting between layers and on the top of the cake. |
