Mietta's Review
Pelican has timber decking on the walls, where huge port holes are cut out of it, as well as underfoot and on the tables. Very butch. Which has nothing to do with its evident appeal to women, as children, dogs, Harley owners and blokes seem to like it too. Architectural firm 6 degrees has converted a veritable forest into a comfortable series of wooded spaces in which to take tapas, consume coffee or down drinks. Service is hospitable, prices are reasonable, the foods not bad and as most of it is snacks (tapas), doesn't get in the way of the occasional drink. The portholed patio is particularly pleasant.

Other published opinions

The Age Cheap Eats 2008 "Pelican dips its beak in a variety of habitats, and comes up grinning every time"

Age Good Food Guide 2008 Score: 14.5/20 "Pelican is not an upmarket restaurant. It's a cafe, brunch spot and delightful wine bar, designed by Melbourne's renowned Six Degrees team, for nononsense good times"

The Age Michael Harden, 12-2-2007 "There are few better ways to be thankful for this than over several beverages on the sheltered veranda of one of their success stories, Fitzroy Street's Pelican. Pelican's position on a corner of the leafy and civilised side of this often trashy strip gets it off to a good start. Sitting on the veranda, sheltered by slatted timber screens with enormous circular cut-outs, allows you to feel part of the streetside action without having to get your hands dirty."

The Age Cheap Eats 2007 "Pelican is one slick, intelligent bird. Professionalism is evident in every detail, from the service to the breakfast-tapas combo menu. Until 4pm weekdays or 2pm at weekends, fab breakfasts include mushroom ragu with brioche and shaved parmesan, or creamed arborio rice with poached pears and roast almonds."

The Age Cheap Eats 2006 St Kilda glitterati and low-key loafers flock to sample sherries and wine at the long bar, and to share Pelican's creative tapas plates.

The Age Good Food Guide 2005 "THE folk at Pelican don't like labels; it's not a restaurant, bar or cafe, they say. It's a 'meeting place'. ... So we'll call it a tapas bar with grand intentions, because its main function is the serving of drinks"

The Age Cheap Eats 2004,Good Bar,Somewhere really special,'With its nautical timber decking, cosy interior and finely rendered tapas menu,Pelican delivers.Groovy (but sometimes aloof) staff float around taking orders and delivering armfuls of tiny plates, all carrying finely tuned little flavour adventures.'
