Mietta's Review
Last year's 'Fawkner the Instution' has been stripped back to the less pretentious 'Fawkner' and more recently become 'The Fawkner Bistro Bar'. New owner - new name. It's a pleasant light coloured room with a dark parquetry floor, bentwood chairs, 'timber' tables and a marble bar. It's claim to fame is that apart from mains most of the other dishes, including desserts, are tapas sized. These smaller offerings are amongst the best eating here. Good wine list with a number of imported wines.

Herald Sun Extra Food, Bob Hart, 29-07-08 Score: *** "This bistro serves the type of tucker expected at a polished pub"

Herald Sun Bob Hart, 31-05-08 "new owners and fresh ideas have put the place back on the map - as a bistro serving precisely the sort of food expected of a polished pub these days. A lick of paint here, a tweak there, cooking smells of distinction emanating from the kitchen, and all is well with the world. At last. Well-regarded Melbourne chef Andrew Bates - whose family, he assures me, were not in the motel business - is one of a gang of four who have bought the freehold to the ground-floor pub complex."

The Age Good Food Guide 2006 score 13/20 "Run by the owners of Chapel Street's Basque, the restaurant, housed in a revamped corner pub, has a stylish central bar, a paredback dining room, and a small lounge with fireplace. Knowing what and how much to order can be tricky."

Herald Sun Stephen Downes 22/2/05 score 16/20 "Fawkner The Institution is breaking new ground by sandwiching its mains with small, lowpriced savoury and sweet things. You'll eat some excellent food here, and we were served attentively. Seven table whites and six reds are available by glass on a fairly long wine list featuring French, Spanish and Italian wines."
