Mietta's Review Kath Byer has run this hotel for over70 years and is truly the 'Reverend Mother' of publicans. She exerts a graceful, relaxed and yet forceful presence over her sprawling suburban empire. The hotel has grown in successive waves from the original corner building to incorporate several dining rooms, lounges and a much-loved beer garden complete with towering peppercorn tree, wandering chooks and casual picnic-style benches. Kath proides herself on offering a country hotel in the city. She has watched three generations of patrons grow up through the changing circumstances of her neighbourhood: market gardens to factories to Monash University and suburban sprawl. She knows all her patrons by their first names and is never too busy for a chat about their lives. This hands-on approach to hotelkeeping is what distinguishes the Notting Hill from today's plethora of TAB pokies-style beer barns and boutique pubs with their absentee landlords and corporate manaagers. Despite its size and location (the middle of nowhere), the Notting Hill makes you feel at home form the moment you enter the door of the public b ar. The food (French onion soup, calamari, steak) is unpretentious, fresh, hearty, generously proportioned and guaranteed to please a range of family palates. The bar is always welcoming.
