Mietta's Review
North Melbourne has always been a bit of a sleeping giant when it comes to eating and drinking in Melbourne, but the Rubicon is a sign that it might be starting to wake up. A big, open bar and restaurant done out in the fairly conventional 'up market' manner with lots of hard surfaces of and vaguely modern art decoration. it's difficult to know where the pub ends and the restaurant begins. This all-in feeling makes for a fairly social atmosphere, but if you're after a quiet bite with a bit of conversation, this ain't the place as the noise levels get pretty raucous on busy nights. It is however and elegant building, with large floor to ceiling windows looking out onto the high Errol Street Victoriana. The food can be described as "Pub: upmarket (modern)" and includes winter standards such as bangers and mash (though it was called something a lot more fancy on the menu) with the word 'jus' liberally employed. It's one of the few places of its kind in North Melbourne and the Friday night suited varieties seemed relieved at not having to go all the way into the Hyatt for their traditional pre-weekend conference.

Other published opinions

Herald Sun, citystyle, Casual Dining, 15/4/03, Donna Coutts, Score 14/20. Away from the traditional breakfast streets of Brunswick, Chapel, Smith and Lygon, this North Melbourne cafe serves a decent but inconsistent breakfast, and has an interesting but heavy lunch menu.
