Mietta's Review Melbourne's narrowest laneway takes you to Yamato from Lonsdale Street. If you prefer you can take a slightly less grotty path from Little Bourke Street to this unprepossessing little restaurant. There are a few tables right inside the street door and a "good back room with cushion style tables in this friendly family operation." The country style Japanese cooking and its tucked away position make Yamato popular with a young adult crowd. Less warmly spoken about by connoisseurs of Japanese food.
Other published opinions
The Age Cheap Eats 2008 "Down Corrs Lane a cartoon rabbit watches over the entrance of quaint Yamato. We'll call him Frank, for, on a wintry eve you'll think you've strayed into a Donnie Darko-esque dreamscape"
The Age Cheap Eats 2007 "Melburnians love a laneway, and dining at Yamato (secreted away down Corrs Lane) is no exception. True, its homely Japanese-style interior is feeling its age, but the food is consistently good value, the service speedy, and it's also a ripper pre-karaoke destination."

The Age, Epicure, 3/2/04, Matt Preston,'feels like something from another age...The food is simple, straightforward Japanese-almost country style'

Ito Japanese Noodle Cafe Victoria A Japanese diner that is Chinese owned and run, in the middle of the city's cinema district. It's good for a quick bowl of ramen or plate of sushi.
Izakaya Chuji Victoria Unpretentious space serving impressive Japanese food at very reasonable prices. Wonderfully eclectic mix in the clientele.
Kaneda Victoria In the dimly-lit inner reaches of the Mid-City Arcade there is a small sushi restaurant that boasts a beautiful tsunami wave and a steady stream of satisfied customers.
Sushi Masa Victoria The food is traditional Japanese, offering Hako-sushi (boxed sushi) and even better jo-sushi (fancy sushi selection).
Sushi Ten Victoria Sushi Ten's black board menu of Japanese soups and rice dishes supplements its offering. All cheap, served happily and quickly, with the sushi and sashimi being the best bet.

Yu-U Victoria No sign just a blank door. Enter. Go down stairs and find yourself in Japan facing a large bar at which food is served.
