Nostro BarettoPh: (03) 9654 5838; Shop 25g, 350 Bourke St, Melbourne 3000 Italian, $$ Other published opinions Age Good Food Guide 2008 Score: 13.5/20 "The GPO retail/restaurant development has been around long enough now for its stars to start sparkling, and Nostro Baretto is one of the brightest" The Age Cheap Eats 2007 "In a laneway by the fashionable GPO, suits tuck in their ties for pastas like perky orecchiette tossed with broccoli, anchovies and ricotta, or robust pizzoccheri (pieces of buckwheat pasta) with cabbage, potato cubes and sage." The Age Cheap Eats 2006 As you'd expect from an Italian restaurant tucked round the back of the newly hip GPO, Nostro Baretto has all the sleek lines and understated class of an old Chanel suit. Herald Sun Dining Out Stephen Downes 9/8/05 Score 15/20 "Nostro Baretto delivers hugely flavoured Italian dishes of modest appearances. The service is experienced and professional, and the atmosphere something quite different for Melbourne. Five whites and four reds are sold by the glass from a limited and fairly expensive wine list that includes a range of mostly expensive Italian wines." Herald Sun Eat Bob Hart 18/6/05 "NOW here is a place that trots out the sort of food your mum might cook - were your mum Italian, that is, and a rather better cook than most mums are these days. In short, it is a casual but accomplished little restaurant that slots perfectly into the special needs of our CBD and the folk who inhabit it." The Age Epicure 14.5/20 John Lethlean 5/7/05 "uses Postal Lane, between the GPO building and Myer, as an integral part of the floor space (as will its soon-to-open neighbours Kenzan at GPO and Ca de Vin.) Clever awnings and heating systems mean the outdoors should be useable all year round. But while Nostro's laneway real estate has the traditional tables and chairs, it also has space for standing or perching at high tables - bar-like, dare we say, in a European manner - where a person eating pasta, reading a paper and enjoying a glass of wine on their own would be perfectly at ease. It's a nice idea. More fundamental: a lot of the food, written on ever-changing blackboards rather than printed menus, is pitched at a price point, and is simple enough to allow Nostro to wedge itself somewhere between sit-down full-service restaurant and up-market sandwich-salad place. It's territory Pellegrini's and Florentino's Cellar Bar have occupied successfully for many years." |
