Mietta's Review
Chennai has excellent south Indian food in a slightly discordant setting that's quite smart with big faux-wicker chairs and period photographs on the wall except for a coke fridge and service system - order and pay at the cash desk. Not the cheapest but amongst the best South Indian. On Tuesday there's an "all-you-can-eat" buffet for $13.95.

Other published opinions

The Age Cheap Eats 2008 "Decor in this out-east eatery is a mix of the curious (photographs of Melbourne and Chennal at the turn of the nineteenth century) and the kitsch (those spiral chandeliers!)"

The Age Cheap Eats 2007 "You won't find a tandoor dish, but you're certainly not starved for choice with a 107-item strong menu. Take a seat next to century-old photos of Melbourne and Chennai, and let the spicy aromas coming from the kitchen get you in the mood."

The Age Cheap Eats 2006 Chennai takes its name and inspiration from the south Indian city. Service is cheerfully chaotic (grab your own cutlery and drinks, and remember to pay at some point) but the food's delicious

The Age Epicure Matt Preston 17/5/05 "As is the way with this sort of cheap and unpretentious place, however, all this is forgotten when our food comes out of the kitchen. This is certainly not the cheapest South Indian restaurant in town (apart from, perhaps, Tuesday's "all-you-can-eat" $13.95 buffet), but if you like your flavours big, then Chennai Banana Leaf is worth a visit."

The Age Cheap Eats 2005 "THE best day to scope this terracotta-floored place is Tuesday, when you can eat as much as you want for $13.95. This is an absolute steal, as you'll dose up on every dosa variant"
