Mietta's Review
Thien An specialises in regional dishes from the Hue (central Vietnam) area. Has an excellent range of tropical fruit drinks. A bit away from the main eating strip so less busy. Friendly owners. Try their speciality, Bun Bo Hue - chilli beef soup with rice vermicelli.

Other published opinions

The Age Cheap Eats 2007 "The first things you'll notice at Thien An are hot tea in a pop-top thermos and the array of condiments. Order from the efficient waitstaff, who'll speedily whip up your meal: regulars request faves such as chilli beef soup with combination (pig blood)'."

The Age Cheap Eats 2006 If you come expecting clean, fresh flavours and excellent value you'll leave Thien An content, even if service can be brusque and vegie options limited.

The Age Good Food Guide 2005 "No, you're here looking for an exemplar of Melbourne's cheap-and-cheerful Vietnamese food culture. Good choice: Thien An serves up bright takes on Vietnam's more robust dishes, evocative of fare served at Hanoi's streetside cafes."

The Age Cheap Eats 2005 "A BREEZY citrus-coloured interior sets this Vietnamese eatery apart from Footscray's drearier pho joints. The fare is bright, too"

The Age Cheap Eats 2004 "AT NIGHT, Irving Street is pretty desolate but this Viet chophouse is abuzz: televisions are blaring, the juicer is spitting out exotic concoctions like jackfruit, avocado or durian, and locals of all ages are slurping on punchbowls of noodles."

The Foodies' Guide 2004,Allan Campion & Michele Curtis,'Aim for the lemongrass chicken, broken rice and salads before being sidetracked by wonderful slushies of durian, custard apple or avocado.'

AGFG 2004, score 12/20, two courses for $25 or less
