Mietta's Review
A back street pub with a quiet beer garden, that is comfortable, affordable, and serves good food. Under the shade of the pergola, with fish and chips and a nice cold pot of Carlton Draught, it is one of those places you hanker for on a sunny Saturday afternoon. The clientele are locals who have been coming here for years, or small groups, just looking to have a nice evening with friends. Boozers note, this isn't a pub to get rolling drunk at, standards held here are higher than in most other establishments, nor is this a pick up joint, the only meat available is on the menu and is served with chips. If you are still here at closing, the request to leave can be a little ungracious, no matter how well behaved you have been.

Other published opinions

The Age Cheap Eats 2008 "Hidden in a backstreet, the Standard was 'alt-country' long before the term was coined"

The Age Cheap Eats 2007 "Amid ride-em-cowboy murals and op-shop memorabilia, punters cosy up by the fire, lazily kill an afternoon in the beer garden (complete with a retractable shade-cloth), or eat in the genteel dining room."

The Age Cheap Eats 2006 The Lions have moved to Brisbane but Fitzroy's backstreet boozers are still pub-grub champs. In the front bar, along with Lions memorabilia and an alt-country soundtrack, are recovery lunches

Herald Sun CityStyle Best of Melbourne 04 Best Beer Garden "There are bigger and more glamorous beer gardens in Melbourne but none are as well loved. Come summer, seats in the eccentrically shaped garden are scarce as inner-city dwellers scramble to eat classic burgers and drink cold beer in the great outdoors. A retractable roof has made it a winter destination, too"

The Age, A2, 29/11/03, Melinda Houston,'They may have come all over Jamie Durie (the beer garden has been landscaped), but this pub remains the quintessential 'local'.Reconnect with old school friends here over burgers and beer.'
