Other published opinions

Herald Sun Simon Plant, 15-07-08 Score: *** "This quirky, home-style diner channels diverse influences and serves good to very good food at a fair price"

The Age Cheap Eats 2008 "Vintage trinkets, contemporary artworks and wooden tables checkering a narrow terrazzo floor - it all comes gorgeously together at the Commoner, with sincere service and no faff"

Age Good Food Guide 2008 Score: 12.5/20 "Finding something decent to eat in the vicinity of Brunswick Street is mostly a needleandhaystack experience. Hence the quiet swell of local rejoicing when The Commoner opened its doors early in 2007, looking like a bright and breezy cafe with its white terrazzo floor, wooden tables and style-on-a-budget fitout, but going above and beyond the call of cafe duty with its food"

The Age Dani Valent, 17-7-2007 "This five-month-old restaurant creates an appealing tone in a narrow shopfront through an accretion of pretty details. There's a lot of stuff - pumpkins on double-decker trays, cheerily bright enamelled cookware, tea candles, ceramic pots - but there's no clutter. There's that effortlessly homely feel that makes you think the place must have been styled to the nines. Owner Jo Corrigan begs to differ, swearing she just cleared the house of vintage artefacts and plonked them in her restaurant. "It wasn't technical. It just happens to be kind of gorgeous,"she says. Fine. I buy it. It makes me feel good."

Herald Sun Dining Out, Simon Plant, 19-06-07 Score: 14/20 "If your idea of dining is a straight-up A menu, a whopping wine list, and urgent service, the Commoner is not for you. This quirky, home-style diner channels diverse influences and serves good to very good food at a fair price. The cellar, though limited, holds some gems from New Zealand, Italy, even Argentina."

The Age Matt Preston, 28-5-2007 "there's something about the relaxed pace, unpretentious front dining room and basic lean-to lavs of this newish cafe on the supposedly wrong side of Johnston Street, Fitzroy, that's quite disarming. It's also cheap - very cheap, given the quality of the food served."
