The Age Dani Valent, 19-2-2008 "Shire opened late last year on the ground floor of a swank new apartment development. It's two minutes' walk from Brunswick Street but easily shrugs off the hullabaloo of the strip. (That said, it's still close enough to the action that any dreams of a nearby parking spot can be laughed away with your first beer.) The restaurant sits either side of the apartment building's central stairway, linked by a corridor that tunnels beneath the stairs. The place has a smart, 1960s-inspired interior with a stone fireplace, timber tables and boxy stools with nice joinery. Upholstered parlour chairs, a French dresser and a fake stag's head take the heat off the modern lines. An old bowling lane, reclaimed from a disused Port Melbourne bowling alley, makes up one part of the floor."
