The Age Cheap Eats 2008 "High style on an op-shop budget is the go at Houndstooth. And this cafe-bar smacks of what gen-next Fitzroyalty hanker for: an intimate space with quality, cheap-as-chips food"

The Age Dani Valent, 27-11-2007 "Houndstooth is the answer. This shopfront bar and diner has been open a couple of years but owner Joseph Simone gave the menu a shake-out early in 2007. He made the food cheap. Really cheap: $10 for a two-course meal and $15 to walk out stuffed. But cheap is one thing, edible is another. Houndstooth's food is good. Imagine a talented home cook hosting a dinner party two days shy of pay day. It's that kind of food: the ingredients aren't flash but the feel is solid."

The Age Michael Harden, 4-7-2007 "Fitzroy's Houndstooth fits the budget bar brief perfectly. A laidback attitude and ridiculously cheap food ($9.99 for two courses, $14.99 for three) channel the spirit of an old-style pub while the clean-lined monochromatic fit-out signals that this place has ambitions beyond the old-style boozer. Slotted into a narrow, highceilinged shopfront on Johnston Street, Houndstooth mixes whitewashed brick walls and painted concrete floor with four communal tables surrounded by comfortable upholstered black and white bench seating."
