Mietta's Review
Uninterrupted views of beach and sea make it a perfect place for a quiet rendezvous - of either a personal or professional nature. Every table is boosted by an expansive view of the mesmerising waves and seems nearly set on the sand: step out the door and you are almost in the sea. A popular spot for the ladies who lunch during the week, and at the weekend they return with their extended families. The fish and chips are a favourite among many, but greatest interest on the menu is the treatment of seafood with its twists and turns in and out of Asian, Middle Eastern and African cuisines. The wine list is well selected, and the service is courteous and proficient. Sails on the Bay remains a reliable restaurant, Derek Fuller and his wife Monica have turned this popular spot into a Melbourne institution.

Other published opinions

Age Good Food Guide 2009 Score: 13.5/20 "One of the most spectacularly located restaurants in Melbourne, Sails sits flush against Elwood Beach, so close you can almost touch the bather-clad crowds ambling past, or the rugged-up and wind-blown walkers"

Age Good Food Guide 2008 Score: 14/20 "With sails on the ceiling, ship-shape white decor and huge windows, this formal dining room makes the best of its dramatic shorefront location"

The Age Good Food Guide 2006 score 14/20 "Looks aren't everything in the hospitality game, but they certainly count for something. And Sails on the bay is a very tidy looking restaurant indeed. This sanctuary of lightness and brightness beckons the special occasion crowd, with its pale pebble-inlaid concrete floors, sumptuous taupe dining chairs, off-white walls and panoramic view over Elwood Beach."

The Age Good Food Guide 2005 "SAILS is such a hit with the bayside set that it expanded in 2004 to fit in more diners. Many of those who pack the austere, white-on-cream dining room are regulars, back for another pampering from smooth staff or perhaps another go at a wine list bulging with French fizz and Australian boutique drops. It's not cheap, but the wraparound sea and sand views help you forget. So does the food."

Age Epicure John Lethlean 14/9/04 SCORE: 13/20 "A safe option for solid but unremarkable modern Australian food by the bay."

The Age, A2,5/7/04, John Weldon,'The menu here is constantly evolving with the seasons as you'd expect, but even more interestingly, the wine list is constantly changing too.To keep up the staff really have to know what they're are doing, and they do,so take advantage of their knowledge and have some fun'

AGFG 2004, score 13/20, excellent wine list
