Enoteca Vino Bar

Mietta's Review
Enoteca has a very long history in Carlton as an importer of Italian wine and specialist food. In 04 after a lengthy struggle with the town planners of the City of Yarra they relocated to the Rising Sun in Lygon St. Currently their produce store takes up one side of the building and the restaurant which showcases them, the other. There's a coffee bar centre front. This should become an important dining destination for inner suburban Melbourne but at the moment it lacks focus and confuses rather than entrances its clients. However, once seated the feeling is good and the food has a genuine Italian feeling. The service is efficient but a little insensitive.

Age Good Food Guide 2009 Score: 12.5/20 "The idea behind this wine bar is not only common sense but clearly it makes sound business sense as well: enjoy at the table dishes made with ingredients from the adjoining foodstore, with 'house' wines, too (in case you miss the tie-in, there's a reminder at the bottom of each menu page)"

Age Good Food Guide 2008 Score: 13/20 "Cosy hospitality arm of an Italian food and wine importer, Enoteca Vino Bar remains a strong concept that is, by and large, well-realised, with a simple aesthetic of foodie/winey ephemera that will appeal to anyone who loves Italy"

The Age Good Food Guide 2006 score 14/2 "With their innate love of Italian food, it's not surprising that Melburnians have embraced this extraordinary enoteca. Amore starts with the sight of dark floors, timber chairs, wall maps and 40-year-old, grape-shaped light fittings. And in addition to the charming interior is service with Old World grace, an Italianate wine list and a wide variety of Italian regional dishes"

Age Epicure John Lethlean 31/8/04 "Enoteca has noble intentions and is an obvious choice for the foodie community, who relish the investigation and discovery. You should also be able to walk in here, without the faintest interest in Italian gastronomy or wine, and have something that knocks your socks off. It's difficult to say that's going to happen. As a restaurant, or wine bar, or enoteca, Enoteca is a great concept but, as yet, not a fully realised one. A little more research?"
