Thai Wi-Rat

Thai/Laotian, $

Mietta's Review
A very simple restaurant serving great Thai food in the China Town Mall. There are a few tables inside but most is outside under the pagodas in the midst of the Valley foot-traffic. Regarded by many as the best Thai food in Brisbane it is also some of the cheapest. There are quite a few unusual dishes on the carte. In 06 mains averaged $10.

Other published opinions

Courier Mail Food and Wine Guide 2009 Queensland "Don't expect svelte service here; it's line up to order, pitiful stemware and the food arrives ad hoc"

Courier Mail food and wine guide Queensland 2008 "Plenty of Thai-Laotian dishes under $10 and scarcely anything over $14"

Sunday Mail David Murray, 07-1-2007 "Known affectionately as "the Rat", Thai Wi-Rat gets its memorable title by combining the names of chef-owners Wichuan Tonelli and Sirirat Saithanoo. Over the years word has spread and crowds have grown. But the restaurant has grown accordingly, taking over a larger outdoor dining area and recently opening an internal expansion that fits an extra 40 people. So rest assured you'll still get a seat. Voted one of Gourmet Traveller magazine's best cheap eats (less than $15) in April 2006, it is no-pretence dining offering budget-priced Thai and Laotian meals with quick and friendly service."

Courier-Mail Good Life Restaurant Guide 2006 * "Thai Wi-Rat may be one of the more casual restaurants in Brisbane, but the authentic rural Thai food is what draws the crowds. It's of a quality not found too often elsewhere in Brisbane"

Courier-Mail Goodlife Restaurant Guide 05 "stunningly authentic rural Thai food, the quality of which is not found too often elsewhere in Brisbane. The simple shopfront gives nothing away on the extraordinary offerings, many traditionally prepared"

Gourmet Traveller Australian Restaurant Guide 2005 Best cheap eats "the most authentic Thai in town. The setting and service are basic, the food deliciously rustic."
