Bowen after dark can seem a bit surreal - incredibly wide streets (it was planned as the capital of Queensland), nobody about, a few street lights in the centre then kilometeres of darkened roads to Queens Beach. Inside the motel Reef Image is a 1960s fantasy. A rectangular blue neon suggests a pool on the ceiling, an eerie green light reflects on the glass bricks outside, but the whilst a flight of fish on the mantlepiece and aquarium pictures are bathed in a rosy glow. The setting of pink tablecloths, wave folded napkins and coral centrepieces, have tragically gone. The new white tablecloths and the steaks (Pesto Eye Fillet $20) and Tuscan mushrooms seem a far remove from the reef image. Reality returns with friendly coastal service trying hard.
