Mietta's Review
Set in Ferguson's Boatshed under the Spit Bridge this Italian restaurant with its accent on seafood slips elegantly into its nautical setting. Yachts come and go in the marina, pelicans digest beak-fulls of fish and the bridge salutes ocassional tall masted boats. Refined cooking which is a bit more expensive at dinner. Excellent service and greeting.

Other published opinions

Sydney Eats 2006 "No, it's not Positano; it just looks and tastes that way. It's Vela, a splendid addition to the Spit waterfront offering fine contemporary Italian food in a casually elegant setting."

SMH Good Food Guide 2005 Score 14/20 "There's a sense of occasion at Vela, the ristorante tucked up next to the Spit Bridge, with water and sailboat views galore. It's there in the way owner Salvatore (Sam) Venuto deftly greets and seats - a sign of his 1970s Bennelong training - in the smart dining room with its reclaimed marine timber floors."

Gourmet Traveller Australian Restaurant Guide 2005 Good Vegetarian Options "A waterside table at this restaurant within Ferguson's Boatshed allows diners to watch a constant parade of yachts and cruisers as they reposition in the marina, and to marvel at the Spit Bridge as it raises to allow tall craft through. Pelicans and seagulls add a holiday feel to the dining experience."

Sydney Eats 2005 "Heaven is a sunny winter afternoon at the water's edge with Neapolitan hospitality and a lunch spread of contemporary Italian dishes ($24.50 for mains or $29.50 with a respectable glass of house wine). Chef Francesco Armillis creates sophisticated regional dishes"

SMH,good living, 30/3/04,Matthew Evans, Score 14/20,'A mix of excellent and just plain food is available at a welcoming Italian eatery with great views at The Spit.It would be great to see more dishes of the calibre of the tagliolini...Vela has an old fashioned and respectable sense of hospitality.'
