Pink Peppercorn RestaurantPh: (02) 9360 9922; 122 Oxford St, DARLINGHURST 2010 Modern Laotian, $$ - Mietta's Review Other published opinions Sydney Morning Herald Good Food Guide 2008 Score: 13/20 "People up this end of Oxford Street are invariably looking for a good time and if it's their taste buds they want tantalised, Pink Peppercorn is a guaranteed score" Sydney Eats 2008 "There aren't too many Laotian restaurants in Sydney as chic as this one. There's a lot of pink in the colour scheme but it's tastefully done and the overall feel is fresh" Sydney Morning Herald Good Food Guide 2007 Score: 13/20 "It can get a little tawdry at this end of town, where you might see a drag queen's impromptu pavement performance, but there's a soothing escape inside this smart, modern and stylish long room with its dark timber floor." Sydney Eats 2006 "here you're in good hands, as the chef and partner in the restaurant is from Laos and recommends thinking of north-eastern Thai and Vietnamese flavours to get you on the right track." SMH Good Food Guide 2005 Score 13/20 "polished dark wood floors, splashes of pink and chocolate tones and contented locals tucking into exciting Lao-inspired cuisine, and it's not long before the frenetic traffic of Oxford Street becomes a distant hum. Offering good-value, quality food is what it's all about and friendly host Peter Barker adds much with his knowledge and recommendations" Sydney Eats 2005 "You mightn't guess from the name, or the hip inner city layout, but the specialty here is Laotian-inspired cooking. And though we're not exactly world experts on the subject, it all tastes pretty darn good to us." SMH Good Living Helen Greenwood 27/11/04 "Pink Peppercorn is a pretty restaurant in a grungy part of town. ... We've come here to eat Laotian food, which is influenced by both the Chinese and French cuisines. It is similar to Thai, especially in Thailand's ethnically Lao north-east, and different from Thai in that the Laotians traditionally prefer their rice sticky and rolled. In this restaurant, however, the food isn't only traditional; it comes with a twist, like the decor. The menu offers the expected, such as chargrilled chicken and stirfried prawns, and the unexpected, such as lamb and Atlantic salmon, not exactly indigenous to Laos. Out of 10 Food 7 Fragrant Laotian food with a modern angle. Service 9 Helpful, handsome and hugely professional. Atmosphere 8 An attractive, sleek room. Value 8 More than reasonable at $47 a head for three courses." |
