Mietta's Review
The Belgian formula of Mussel Pots with chips from $18.50, Steak Frites. Blonde and brunette beers are the mainstay with a few other specialities such as Waterzooi (seafood casserole) and Flemish Beef Stew cooked with Hoegaarden beer. Chips are superb, but beware the salad. Choose from a large selection of beers, some of them deceptively strong, especially the Trappiste beers, brewed by Belgian Monks. Also at 15 Harrington St The Rocks, 9241 1775.

Other published opinions

Sydney Morning Herald Kelsey Munro, 22-5-2008 "Through the glass doors there's an agreeable buzz. Warm and cosy, it looks like the inside of a ship: all wooden wainscoting, bevelled mirrors and gleaming brass rails. We tuck into a table for two and take it in. If design is about setting a mood, the interior is perfectly judged to pique a certain appetite: it calls for moules frites (mussels with chips) and Flemish beer."

Sydney Eats 2008 "This place is a temple to beer that also happens to offer excellent Belgian food. It may get very noisy and crowded, and the service may be hit and miss, but it's the beer that stars, even appearing in many of the dishes on the menu, such as Hoegaarden mussels $20.90"

SBS Eating Guide to Sydney 2005 "Blink and you'd think you were in one of Brussels' legendary brasseries-yellowing posters on the wall, a dark-panelled bar with lots of brass and booth tables, incredible artisan beer on tap, and platters of mussels with crunchy fries on the side. This clever reproduction comes courtesy of Belgian chef Olivier Massart."

SMH Good Food Guide 2005 Score 12/20 "A big clock is permanently set at 5 minutes to 12 - symbolising the hour when Belgian pubs used to close. Thanks to that freezing of time, the boozing need never stop. Wooden pews and tables lend a slightly monastic air to the Belgian-style interior, but the rollicking crowd is anything but, particularly after a couple of 11.5% strength brews. Every night is party night and you can wait three weeks to land a table."

Sydney Eats 2005 "Belgian beer cafes have quickly become all the rage, and this one, featuring traditional Belgian dishes, also makes for good eating. Dieters will be taking the night off here, for many of the dishes are done in beer and/or accompanied by fries and mayo."

SMH GFG 2004, Score 13/20,'A pub more than a restaurant, Epoque dishes out decent mussels, meat dishes and a dizzying selection of imported Belgian beers...Service is friendly'

Liquid-Bar Culture & Beyond, Winter Edition 2003,'a great place for a drink any time of the year...especially ideal for those lazy winter nights when all you want to do is tuck into a good beer'

30/5/2001 "Best Beer Bar"

SMH 19/9/2000 listed in article on Olympians, this is where the Belgians could come to feel at home, specialities include carbonade (beef braised in beer and onions), waterzooi (a creamy dish of poached fish or chicken) and Belgian beer: kriek and gueze.
